Chemical Peels
Chemical Peels
A chemical peel is an in-office treatment in which a solution is applied to the skin to remove dull, damaged outer layers. As your skin renews itself, the fresh skin underneath is typically smoother, brighter, and more even in tone. Peels can be tailored to your skin type and goals, and they work well as part of an ongoing skin care plan.
What Can a Chemical Peel Help With?
- Dull, rough, or uneven skin texture
- Uneven skin tone, sun spots, and some types of discoloration
- Fine lines
- Clogged pores and acne-prone skin
- Mild sun damage
Superficial vs. Medium-Depth Peels
Superficial peels use milder acids to gently exfoliate the outermost layer of skin. They involve little to no downtime and are often done as a series to build results gradually.
Medium-depth peels reach deeper into the skin to address more noticeable sun damage, discoloration, and fine lines. Results are more noticeable, and recovery takes longer.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
Many people with the concerns above are good candidates for a peel, but peels are not right for everyone. Please let us know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have an active cold sore or skin infection, scar easily, have recently taken isotretinoin (Accutane), or use prescription retinoids. Some skin types have a higher risk of pigment changes, which is one reason we choose the type and strength of each peel carefully. At your consultation, we will help you decide which peel, if any, is right for you.
What to Expect
Your skin is cleansed, and the peel solution is applied for a set amount of time. A warm or stinging sensation during treatment is common. The peel is then removed or neutralized, and soothing products and sunscreen are applied.
Downtime
After a superficial peel, you may have mild redness and light flaking for a few days. After a medium-depth peel, expect redness, swelling, and peeling that can last a week or more. Let flaking skin come off on its own; do not pick or peel it. We will give you aftercare instructions specific to your treatment.
Sun Protection
Freshly peeled skin is especially sensitive to the sun. Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day, use a hat, and avoid tanning and direct sun while your skin heals. Good sun protection also helps your results last. You can find sunscreens and gentle skin care in The Skin Store.
